Meat production in India is growing steadily. Nearly 50% of meat produced in India comes from poultry. Th slaughtering of poultry generates a considerable quantity of coproducts (byproducts) that are unsuitable for human consumption. Mismanagement of this waste has several implications in terms of environmental pollution, loss of revenue and disease transmission etc.
The poultry slaughter coproducts were processed by dry rendering, wherein they were sterilised and vacuum dried. The rendered poultry meal was used for making pet snacks and pet food. The both the products are shelf stable, highly nutritious and well acceptable by pets.
The pet dog population is increasing in the country and there is great demand for the pet food/pet snacks. The technology is suitable throughout the country.
The poultry slaughter waste collected from slaughterhouse was subjected to dry rendering to obtain rendered poultry meal. The rendered poultry meal was used to prepare extruded pet snacks/food. The products had good nutritional profile. The extruded pet snacks and pet food are unique, well acceptable by pet dogs and are cost-effective product. Further, a profitable utilization of animal by-products enhances income in meat value chain. Besides all it has potential to minimise environmental pollution emanating from slaughter by-products that are unsuitable for human consumption.
The pet snacks and pet food technologies are adaptable and already technology is licensed to three firms. As there is growing demand for pet foods and pet population in the country, it can be scaled up to meet the demand. Financial assistance for setting up rendering and pet food production plant, human resource development is required for adoption of technology.
